What Risks are Associated with Liposuction?

Just like all surgical procedures, plastic surgery can have risks and complications.  For example, when people haveliposuction, they will face risks such as:

Having excess skin:  this is particularly true when patients are older as liposuction may result in people having more loose skin. After liposuction, people may arrange a separate procedure to have the excess skin removed.

Scarring:  even though liposuction is not as invasive as other forms of cosmetic surgery, some patients have scars from their procedures.  During liposuction, surgeons usually make two small incisions that are less than 4 to 10 mm long.  These incisions are needed so surgeons can insert the liposuction cannula and are usually hidden in natural skin creases or the belly button.  Still, there are cases where scars may be visible post-surgery.

Swelling:  some patients may experience persistent swelling for weeks after liposuction has been performed.  However, wearing an appropriate compression garment can reduce the swelling and expedite healing.
