Did you know that reconstructive nose surgery was first performed in India? Long ago, reconstructing noses (rhinoplasty) was used to punish criminals. Whenever people committed certain crimes, their noses would be amputated as part of their punishment.
Then, throughout the 1700s till 1934, two well-known doctors began to perform nose reduction procedures. Their names were Johann Dieffenbach and Jacques Joseph.
In 1973, Dr. Wilfred Goodman introduced the open rhinoplasty technique and the procedure become increasingly popular because people could not only reshape their noses, but also improve breathing conditions. Prior to the introduction of Dr. Goodman's open technique, all rhinoplasty procedures were performed closed, which presented several complications.
Now, more and more people are catching onto the cosmetic and health benefits of rhinoplasty and it is one of the more popular plastic surgery procedures performed by doctors today.
