Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries in the United States. A woman may elect to have this breast surgery for many different medical and aesthetic reasons, including balancing the size of the breasts and compensating for reduced breast mass after pregnancy or surgery.

Breast augmentation involves the placement of breast implants. These may be filled with silicone or saline are placed behind each breast, underneath either breast tissue or the chest muscle. The procedure generally lasts one to two hours and is usually performed under general anesthesia. After surgery, a patient's bust line may be increased by one to two cup sizes. To minimize scar visibility, incisions are made in inconspicuous places, such as the armpit, the crease on the underside of the breast, or edge of the areola. The breast is then lifted, creating a pocket into which the implant is inserted.
