General Surgery and then enter a highly competitive two or three year
Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery residency. This is over seven years
of demanding surgical training which is vital to becoming a qualified
Plastic Surgeon. Dr. Gorodisky has completed seven years of training by

Due to the popularity of Plastic Surgery among patients, some physicians
and non-physicians without any formal training in Plastic & Reconstructive
Surgery are claiming to be "Plastic Surgeons". Many of these
"Plastic Surgeons" are only interested in the financial gain
of performing cosmetic procedures and are not concerned with the well
being of the patient. It is not against the law to perform cosmetic procedures
if you are not a Plastic Surgeon, in fact some self-proclaimed "Plastic
Surgeons" are residency trained in Dentistry, Obstetrics and Gynecology,
Family Medicine, Dermatology, Internal Medicine and are not trained in
Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at all. Many of these "Plastic
Surgeons" have attended weekend courses and have not had any formal
training in Plastic Surgery. Dr. Gorodisky recommends that you ask your
Plastic Surgeon for verification that they are residency or fellowship
trained and board certified in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. These
are the only two national medical education committees with approved training
programs in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery: the American Board of
Medical Specialties (ABMS) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
Dr. Gorodisky has completed an
AOA approved training program in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and
adheres to the rigorous safety and practice guidelines set forth by the
AOA and the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.
When you are choosing your plastic surgeon, ask to see their credentials,
or simply ask to see their diploma verifying they have completed a Plastic
& Reconstructive Surgery residency or fellowship. Look to see if the
diploma clearly states "Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery".
You may be surprised how many "Plastic Surgeons" can't verify
this basic information. You deserve the best care and you should not accept
any less of your Plastic Surgeon.
What is a DO?
Doctors who have a DO after their name are fully trained and licensed physicians
who perform surgery and prescribe medications, but have a holistic approach
to medicine. The DO philosophy emphasizes the treatment of the whole patient
and not just the symptoms. When applied to plastic surgery, this philosophy
also embraces preventative health care, nutrition, and a relationship
where the doctor and the patient work together toward the common goal
of excellent health and beauty. Dr. Gorodisky is one of the few board
certified plastic and reconstructive surgeons in the United States who
is also a DO.
