New guidelines have been developed by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to strengthen ethical interactions between the medical industry and its member physicians. These guidelines are housed in a document entitled "Considerations for Interactions with Industry" in the hopes that plastic surgeons will not become biased by the actions of an industry professional.
Phillip Haeck, MD, president of the ASPS, stated that: "Following these new guidelines will help to ensure that interactions with industry will be for the benefit of patients and remain consistent with AdvaMed and PhRMA Industry guidelines." In the plastic surgery industry, it is not uncommon for doctors to be courted with promotional speaking gigs, gifts, meals and entertainment in the hopes of switching over to a new product. The guidelines are voluntary, but the ASPS hopes that its member physicians will take them seriously in the future.
