In recent news, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given the nod of approval for a new silicone-gel breast implant made by Sientra. Now, Sientra is the third company that has approval from the FDA to manufacture and sell silicone-gel implants to plastic surgeons in the United States. The company, which is located in California, received approval to market its implants to doctors performing breast implant and augmentation procedures on women who are at least 22 years of age.
According to the company, it will market its implants in several shapes and sizes. Currently, round implants are sold by the other two approved companies which are Johnson & Johnson Mentor and Allergan Inc. Data shows that breast implant procedures are very common in the country. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that over 307,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2011. This marked a 3.6% increase compared to 2010.
