Rising Obesity Rates Bring on More Plastic Surgeries

Studies have shown that more and more Americans are becoming obese as time goes on, and then they are turning to reconstructive surgeries to help slim them down when things get out of hand. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a medical journal that is published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. They recently highlighted this phenomenon in their journal, saying that plastic surgeons should begin to perfect bariatric surgeries as more and more patients ask for help perfecting their body despite weight gain.

One common plastic surgery procedure involves tightening the skin around areas where a person has lost excessive amounts of weight. Often once the weight is gone the dieter’s skin is left loose and flabby because of the rapidly reducing body size. Authors of a recent study show that bariatric surgery popularity has paralleled the rise of obesity in America. In 1990, not one state had a prevalence of obesity greater than 15 percent. Ten years later in 2009, only two states have an obesity rate under 20 percent. These are Colorado and the District of Columbia.

Some people can decrease their weight through lifestyle modifications. This means putting more emphasis on diet and exercise. Yet others may not be able to accomplish a five percent decrease in weight this way. These people may need to go under the knife for a little help. Tummy tucks and liposuction are only a few of the methods that can help to reduce a person’s body mass and get a sleeker physique. For those that are medically obese, it may be best to get a bariatric surgery like gastric bypass before undergoing a tummy tuck. The cosmetic surgeries can help to enhance the patient’s appearance after the weight-reducing surgery has been completed.
