What Is Dermabrasion?

If you are looking for a way to smooth your skin or rejuvenate your face without invasive surgery, then a dermabrasion treatment might be exactly what you need. Dermabrasion treatment makes use of an abrasive instrument to sand the skin and remove a thicker, uneven out layer that may show wrinkles, creases, and puckers. The treatment can also eliminate age spots, black heads, fine lines, enlarged pores, and acne or scars left by acne. Dermabrasion treatments also thicken the collagen in the skin. This will help to facilitate a younger looking complexion. Collagen is a protein in the skin that is often abundant in children, but dwindles as individuals get older. The collagen makes the skin look taut and smooth. As a person gets older, he or she will typically develop looser, saggy skin.

There are two kinds of dermabrasion treatments. One is a diamond-tipped device for more superficial abrasion. Another is a wire brush device for deeper treatments. In both cases, the dermabrasion treatments can help to reduce the effects of scarring, discoloration on the face, and sun damage. The treatments have also been known to lessen the appearance of stretch marks.

The treatment may be performed on the whole face or on parts of the face. Most commonly it is performed around the mouth and on wrinkles around the eyes. The procedure may be performed using local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia. Normally, after the session your plastic surgeon will recommend a special after care regimen to stimulate healing which may take 1-2 weeks. After healing is complete a medical skin care regimen is usually recommended using products that will enhance and maintain your results from the procedure.
