Before silicone became a popular way to enhance the breasts, women in the early 20th century would use glass balls, ivory, peanut oil, ox cartilage, and even wood chips in order to improve the appearance of their bust. Now, advancements in medicine have made these odd materials obsolete. Instead, plastic surgeons now often choose between saline and silicone implants.
According to a report from 2012, about 31% of breast enhancement procedures are performed with saline breast implants, which have a solid silicone outer shell and are filled with sterile salt water. The implants can either be pre-filled or can be filled to the patient's anatomy at the time of the surgery.
Fully 69% of all breast enhancement procedures are with silicone breast implants. These are implants that have a solid silicone outer shell that is pre-filled with cohesive silicone gel. They come in different sizes and can have either smooth or textured shells. Silicone was approved for this purpose by the FDA in 2006. Since then, breast reconstruction and enhancement surgery has become far more common than it was in earlier years. Recently a more firm, anatomically shaped silicone implant has been approved by the FDA. These implants provide a more natural shape for women with very little breast tissue.
Reasons to Choose Breast Reconstruction or Augmentation
According to reports by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, there were 101,176 surgeries of this type in 1997, and an overwhelming 316,848 of the same surgeries performed in 2011, a massive increase in this type of cosmetic surgery. Who is getting breast reconstruction or augmentation done? The average woman who undergoes a breast augmentation is in her mid-30s and is either married or in a long-term relationship. Why do women choose to have breast reconstruction surgery done? Here are some of the reasons:
- 91% of all women surveyed after breast reconstruction say that they had the surgery performed so that they would look better unclothed
- 84% said that they chose to get surgery to look better with clothes on
- 84% also say that they got the surgery because they wanted larger breasts
- 81% of women claim that the surgery helped them with their self-confidence
- 79% say that the surgery made them feel better about themselves
