Are Selfies Causing a Push in Plastic Surgeries?

According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the selfie trend on social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and SnapChat is causing an increase in the number of people who choose to undergo face-related plastic surgeries. The study says that one in three plastic surgeons admits that they have seen many people requesting facial alterations due to their self-consciousness on social media. Some plastic surgeons say that in today's world, you are seen more on screens in photographs than you are in person. Many people want a face that is more photogenic and may decide to alter any features of their face that they don't like.

The president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery says that selfies are like a microscope image of a person's face. After taking a photo, people look at the image with a critical eye before posting or sending. Oftentimes, images on Instagram or Snapchat can be first impressions that people put out to prospective friends and romantic interests. Patients may want to reduce the size of their nose, reduce bags under their eyes, tighten the skin on their face, or more to improve their appearance.

The study on selfies and plastic surgery trends discovered that there was a 10% jump in nose-related procedures and a 7% increase in hair transplants in 2013. Also, there was a 6% rise in eyelid surgery. 58% of all plastic surgeons interviewed for the study say that they also saw an increase in injectable procedures for people under the age of 30. Women accounted for the majority (80%) of facial procedures last year, mostly working to preserve a youthful appearance.
