Is Breast Reduction Surgery Right for You?

From an aesthetic point of view, many individuals would love to have naturally large breasts, but in reality, living with unusually large breasts can be a source of discomfort, on a physical and emotional level.

Women who have voluptuous curves often find that their breasts make it difficult to buy properly fitted blouses, dresses and shirts. Engaging in physical activity such as running, dancing, and aerobics and even yoga can be next to impossible, and large breasts can be a source of unwanted attention.

These days, if a woman is endowed with naturally large breasts, she has a surgical option which can ease discomfort, and achieve an acceptable breast size that is proportionate to her body – it is calledbreast reduction surgery.

How Breast Reduction Surgery Works

Breast reduction surgery is also known as " reduction mammoplasty." This procedure removes excess tissue, fat and skin from a woman's breasts.

If you have large breasts and they make you uncomfortable, you may want to consider breast reduction surgery to achieve a size that would make you happy. Women undergo breast reduction surgery for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Poor self-image due to large breasts
  • Unwanted attention
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Restricted physical activity
  • Chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain
  • Difficulty finding well-fitted bras and clothing
  • Chronic skin rashes under the breasts

Should I wait before getting surgery?

Someone can have breast reduction surgery at any age, even as a teenager in some cases, however, it's usually better to wait until the breasts have fully developed.

If you have not started a family, but you intend to, or if you are not finished having children, you may want to postpone the surgery until pregnancy is no longer an issue. If you become pregnant, changes in your breast tissue during pregnancy may affect the surgical results.

Breast Reduction Surgery Statistics

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2014, 41,309 female patients underwent breast reduction surgery, and another 26,175 men underwent breast reduction surgery for the treatment of gynecomastia (abnormally enlarged male breasts).

Breast reduction surgery is very popular and most women (and men) who undergo this procedure are very satisfied with their results.
