Vaginal rejuvenation is a surgery that combines vaginoplasty (tightening of the vagina) with labiaplasty (reshaping of the labia). According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), there were more than 5,000 procedures performed in 2013 in the U.S., a 44% increase from 2012, making it one of the fastest growing procedures in America.
While some view vaginal plastic surgery as a procedure undergone only for aesthetic purposes, this perception ignores the functional and psychological benefits of this exciting procedure, specifically an increase in sexual satisfaction.
Vaginal rejuvenation surgery can correct the following issues:
- Clitoral hood
- Enlarged labia minora or majora
- Labial changes after childbirth
- Disproportionate mons pubis
Physical Changes After Pregnancy
When a woman is pregnant, she carries the weight of the baby for nine months, which stretches vaginal muscles, making vaginal walls looser. In effect, friction during intercourse can be reduced, leading to reduced sexual satisfaction.
Additionally, some women experience tearing during childbirth, which causes the development of scar tissue, leading to severe pain in the perineum. The good news is that through vaginal rejuvenation, this scar tissue can be removed to decrease the pain during intercourse.
Two Procedures: External and Internal
Vaginal rejuvenation surgery consists of two main procedures: internal and external. Internal surgery tightens the vaginal walls to enhance sensation during intercourse, while the external aspect of the procedure focuses on enhancing the appearance.
Labiaplasty can reduce the size or changes in the shape of a woman's labia minora. This is typically accomplished by correcting the asymmetry or making them smaller. Women often experience changes in their labia due to aging or childbirth, however, some women are naturally born with larger labia.
Women with enlarged labia may find exercise, tight-fitting clothing, sexual intercourse, and thongs uncomfortable. But, with vaginal rejuvenation, these discomforts can be remedied permanently.
