A Plastic Surgeon's Advice to Family and Friends

When you come to our office, you will get to have a one-on-one consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Yuly Gorodisky. He will discuss your goals and evaluate your health and your treatment options. But, have you ever wondered what kind of secrets plastic surgeons share with their own friends and family? Lots of people do!

As an Oxnard plastic surgeon, Dr. Gorodisky gets all kind of questions from patients, friends, family, peers and even strangers on occasion. As an expert in aesthetic plastic surgery, here's some advice that he gives to those closest to him.

What question gets asked the most often by friends and family?

The one question that comes up a lot is, "At what age should I begin undergoing anti-aging procedures, such as BOTOX, derma fillers and a facelift?"

It's important to start early with sunblock, antioxidants, retinoids and peels. As far as anti-aging injectables and surgery, there isn't an ideal age because everyone ages differently. When the wrinkles appear and before they get too deep, it is a good time to look into non-surgical, injectable treatments. When the skin starts sagging and it looks better when you pull the skin back, it may be time for a facelift.

What's the latest in plastic surgery news?

There's nothing boring about plastic surgery, it's constantly evolving. Less invasive procedures are becoming the norm and treatments such as BOTOX, Juvederm and Sculptra are often used in combination with surgery to yield the best results. There have also been major breakthroughs in non-surgical body contouring using Coolsculpting and Ultrashape.

Surgery continuously aims to be less invasive with shorter incisions, endoscopic surgery, and faster recovery periods. Many procedures that required general anesthesia and a long recovery, can now be done with some sedation in less time with similar results.

When you look at me, what do you think I need?

In casual conversations, we hear this a lot. This is a broad question without a single answer. Our question is, what do you feel is the problem? What we want to know is what is it that's bothering you, then we can fix it.

Where's the plastic?

In plastic surgery the term "plastic" is of Greek origin, meaning to shape or mold, which is how the material plastic got its name. Plastic surgeons specialize in changing the shape of the human body.

What's the best way to take care of my body?

Most common advice: drink lots of water, stay physically and mentally active, avoid tobacco, minimize alcohol, exercise, don't tan, and lastly, keep your weight under control.

This all seems like common sense advice, but all too often people neglect their health. Sometimes we'll even ask a patient to lose 20 pounds healthfully before undergoing liposuction or surgery because the healthier they are before surgery, the better the outcome.
