In our mother’s and grandmother’s generation, there was little knowledge and information about skincare compared to what we know today. Back in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and beyond, women would sunbathe, slather on oily cosmetics, smoke, and forgo sunscreen with little thought of how these behaviors affected their skin.
Fast-forward to today, thanks to scientific research, we know a lot more about the effects of ultraviolet rays, smoking, alcohol, diet, and pore-clogging substances, all of which contribute to premature aging. While diet and lifestyle factors are huge contributors to aging, they are not the only things that make us look older than we want to. Genetics plays a role too.
Regardless if you have fair skin or dark skin, once you’re in your late 20s, you want to start taking extra special care of your skin. In fact, if we were to recommend just three skincare must-haves for the woman 30 or above, they would be: sunscreen, vitamin C and retinol.
Obviously, you want to use high-quality cosmetics, stay away from junk food, drink loads of water every day, and eat “clean,” but no matter what you do, you want to use these three things. Why? Because, they’re scientifically proven to work and it would be unfortunate to leave them out of your daily skincare routine.
What You Should Do
As far as sunscreen is concerned, we recommend at least an SPF 30. You can use SPF 50 or 100, but the higher sun protection won’t make that much of a difference. If you’re 30 or above, you should start applying Vitamin C cream for its powerful antioxidant effects and its ability to actually reverse sun damage. Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that boosts collagen production, smooths fine lines, and evens out discoloration.
