With the rising popularity of sternum tattoos and tattoos near the breast area and ribcage, it is not uncommon to wonder if a breast augmentation will affect potential body art in the area. The skin is made up of multiple layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. A tattoo needle only goes into the dermis layer. Because the breast implants are below this, patients can still get body art in the areas where they have had augmentations, but we do recommend taking some precautions to ensure optimal healing.
Here are some of our tips to help with the healing process:
- If you have reconstructed breasts, consult with a member of our team before getting a tattoo. We recommend this because women with reconstructed breasts have less fat and tissue beneath the skin than women with augmentations. Some women opt to get tattoos in this area to cover any scars they might have, and we always support our patients in looking and feeling their best. In fact, tattoos are often used to create the appearance of nipples or hide scars for women who have had reconstruction. If you’re interested, we can make recommendations on how to go about it in the safest way possible.
- Make sure you receive your tattoo from a certified professional who uses sterile equipment. Don’t assume that every registered tattoo parlor takes the proper precautions. You don’t want an improper sterilization to cause an infection in the skin, potentially damaging your augmentation and your health. After you get the tattoo, continue to reduce chances of infection by taking the proper sterilization steps at home.
- Spread out your surgery and your tattoo so that they do not occur too closely together. Because both procedures require work and healing from your immune system, this will help keep your immune system strong. It will also help make sure the skin where you had surgery is not overly sensitive. Implants stretch the skin, making it tender while the body adjusts to accommodate the augmentation. It can take anywhere between one and four months for a breast augmentation to be fully healed. A member of our team can provide you with some clarity about when your augmentation will be healed.
- If you already have a tattoo in the location where you would like surgery, the surgery could compromise the appearance of the tattoo. A skilled surgeon like Dr. Gorodisky will be able to work around a tattoo as best as it allows, but the tattoo may still see some damage. For this reason, if you have plans of getting a tattoo and a surgery in the same area, we recommend getting the surgery first.
