How to Choose Breast Implant Size

Find the Perfect Size for Your Shape

If you’ve decided to undergo breast augmentation surgery, you are likely dealing with a wide range of emotions, from excitement to curiosity. Maybe you are excited about taking the plunge, but perhaps you are not sure where to begin, and you are probably not even sure what kind of implant you are looking for. Luckily, the team at West Coast Plastic Surgery Center has helped many patients reach the breast size they want, and we are happy to do the same for you.

When it comes to deciding the right breast implant size for you, it is important to remember that we are not working towards your ideal cup size. While it helps to have your ideal cup size in mind, this is not the way that surgeons take measurements. Instead, we measure in cubic centimeters (CCs) or milliliters.

As you might guess, the more CCs or milliliters an implant has, the larger it will be. Different implants also have different diameters and profiles. The diameter is the width of the implant at its widest point. Two breast implants could have the same diameters, but different measurements, and they would still look like differently sized implants. Moderate and high-profile implants also appear differently than one another. Implants with a moderate profile are flatter, while high profile implants are higher and more rounded.

There are also different shapes to consider when determining ideal implant size. Breast implants can either be round or teardrop shaped. Because round implants have their round shape, they tend to provide more lift and cleavage than teardrop implants. Round implants tend to flow freely, while teardrop implants hold their shape. Teardrop implants might appear more natural because they mimic the sloping appearance of a breast, while round implants tend to be more dramatic, so it simply depends on the look you want to achieve when you are deciding between these shapes. When you are choosing your breast implant size, you will want to take the following factors into consideration:

  • Body type

When it comes to choosing a breast implant size, the most important element is to make sure that the implants are flattering to your shape. Women who are petite might not opt for an especially large or wide implant because it might not create the proportional look they would want. Different implant sizes will appear different on various individuals, and some people might require bigger or smaller implants because of their specific anatomy. Having a surgeon who you can trust to thoroughly explain all of your options, like the team at West Coast Plastic Surgery Center will do, is essential to producing successful results.

  • Body shape

This factor goes hand-in-hand with the last, but it is still an important consideration. Body shape plays a major role in what kind of implants will be best for you as well. Women who are curvy are able to hold larger implants with greater ease, and women with this build often choose to do so in order to create a more balanced appearance. On the other hand, it might not be comfortable for women with a larger build to carry especially large implants. You will be in good hands if you are with a surgeon who does not create false expectations in terms of what works for your body. At West Coast Plastic Surgery Center, we always work to meet your expectations. At the same time, we will make sure those expectations are possible and will be comfortable for you in the long run.

  • Age

Because breast augmentations require making incisions in the skin, the strength of the skin plays a role in the level of implants that an individual should have. Skin strength often deteriorates with age. For this reason, younger women with stronger skin might be better able to withstand larger implants if that is the look they would like to achieve. Older women who might have thinner skin or less breast tissue might be more pleased and comfortable with slightly smaller implants that will work for their skin. This is, by no means, a hard-and-fast rule. Every patient is different, and so is the strength of their skin and breast tissue. It will be important to have a conversation about how age and skin health plays into the right breast implant size so that you go into the surgery feeling prepared.

Taking all of that into consideration, the most popular breast implant sizes are between 350 to 400 cc. This would look like a small to large C cup for most patients. However, the size of breast implants generally ranges from 200 cc to 600 cc. It all depends on the patient’s desired look and what they feel comfortable with. During your consultation, Dr. Gorodisky will discuss your goals and let you try on different cup sizes to see what works the best for your body. It is nice to be aware and educated about all of your options, but when you work with our team, you can trust that we will lead you in the right direction and help you achieve your ideal breast size.
