Debunking Breast Augmentation Myths

Many women are hesitant to get cosmetic breast surgery because of their misconceptions about the procedure. In 2012, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery shows that breast augmentation was the most common surgery performed in the U.S. This procedure has been shown to have 94% satisfaction rate and improves a woman's self-esteem and her sex life. Still, many women are concerned about adverse effects as a result of their surgery.

One common misconception is the assumption that the breasts will look fake or unnatural. While this may be the look of choice for some women, with various styles and shapes of implants, a qualified plastic surgeon can pick the best implants to achieve the desired look for each patient's preference, taking into consideration the patient's body type and dimensions.

Another common misconception is the concern that a person with breast implants won't be able to breastfeed. Although there may be a chance that the milk delivery to the nipple may be decreased, depending on the surgical technique, most women with breast implants still successfully breast feed their children after surgery.

Some are concerned that implants will transfer harmful chemicals into the mother's milk, which can then be transferred to the infant. There is no evidence they this happens.

Lastly, many potential patients believe that breast implants have to be replaced regularly. This is also not true. Implants do not need to be replaced frequently, though additional surgery may be necessary during the patient's lifetime. This will depend on the patient's age when having the procedure, the type of implant used, and how the woman treats her physical health after the surgery.
