Does Your Knee Fat Age You?

Let's say you're a total health nut and proud of it. You go for a run five days a week and you spend the rest of your time doing lunges and body pump classes. When you're not at the gym or running, you're watching every bit of organic produce that goes into your mouth.

Your skin looks beautiful, your hair is long and shiny, and you have achieved the optimum body fat percentage for your height – so you proudly wear tennis skirts and short dresses even though you're well-beyond the nothing-above-the-knees-past 30 rule that your mother dutifully obeyed.

You really do look amazing, perhaps you have a better figure now than you did in your 20s. Nobody would guess how old you really are until—gasp, they look down at your knees.

Understand that having fullness around the knees doesn't necessarily mean that you have excess fat, or that you're exercising wrong. Rather, it's likely a sign of middle age.

Dr. Yuly Gorodisky receives a lot of leg-area complaints from patients who want to restore their youthful appearance. Often, there may be some fat in the knees, but there is often skin redundancy as well. Our experience is that one of the best ways to treat excess knee fat is with liposuction.

Due to their size and location, the knees are notorious for being a tricky area to treat – the fat simply adheres differently than the love handles or belly fat, or another "larger" and less bony area.

The knees are accentuated by an adherent region that is located above the kneecap; this creates a crease, which further defines the area. Of course, we all know that fat can accumulate just about anywhere on the body, but some of us are genetically predisposed to collecting fat around the knees as we age.

Almost every patient we see complains about this common problem area.

An increasing number of plastic surgeons are using a technique that is known by various names, including precision, micro or selective liposuction. With this procedure, one to three ounces of fat is carefully removed from small areas, such as the knees, ankles, chin, neck, back and upper arms.

To effectively treat excess knee fat, it's a matter of fine-tuning the smallest of details. Even after someone has had liposuction around the knee, their pants will likely fit about the same, but of course, they will look better.

This procedure is different than liposuction procedures for larger areas of the body like the abdomen, thighs, or love handles – all of which can drastically change the way a patient looks and feels in their clothing.

Liposuction of the knees is a procedure for the most meticulous of patients, especially those who are eager to fine-tune every nook and cranny of his or her body.
