About Male Breast Reduction Surgery

While men are notorious for not being as concerned about their appearance as women, in recent years that outlook has changed. These days, more and more men are turning to plastic surgery to reduce the appearance of enlarged male breasts, to achieve a slimmer physique, and to reduce the signs of aging.

One condition that men are treating with plastic surgery is overly large male breasts (gynecomastia).

What is gynecomastia? It is an increase in male breast tissue.

Gynecomastia can occur with one or both breasts, and it is not uncommon for the breasts to enlarge unevenly. Many men with gynecomastia are turning to male breast reduction surgery to correct this condition.

What causes gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is usually a noncancerous condition that can be caused by hormonal changes, however, sometimes the causes are unknown. Often, an increase in the hormone estrogen, or a decrease in the hormone testosterone is the culprit.

Sometimes gynecomastia is associated with breast cancer, liver cancer, testicular cancer, drug use, congenital syndromes, or thyroid disorders. In some cases, it is necessary to rule out other diseases before moving forward with male breast reduction surgery.

Treatment Options for Gynecomastia

Usually, it's not necessary to seek treatment for gynecomastia, however, in some cases a doctor my prescribe hormone therapy. If you have enlarged male breasts (gynecomastia) and it makes you uncomfortable, surgery may be an excellent option.

Gynecomastia surgery reduces the breast size in men who find themselves embarrassed by their enlarged breasts.

When to consider breast reduction surgery:

* If you're reluctant to remove your shirt at the beach, when you go swimming, or in front of your partner.

* If enlarged breasts make it difficult to play sports.

* You are experiencing psychological discomfort because of the condition.

* You want to boost your self-confidence.

Gynecomastia treatment, otherwise known as male breast reduction includes liposuction or removing the excess glandular tissue and skin, or a combination of these methods.
