The Post-Divorce Plastic Surgery Trend

People have plastic surgery for various reasons, whether it's to get their body back after having kids, improve a feature they were born with, or reverse the signs of aging. Then you have the men and women who decide to have "work done" after their divorce.

We caution patients against going under the knife immediately following a significant life event, such as a horrible breakup or a divorce, but we cannot ignore that we've seen an influx of divorcees looking to improve their appearance.

Whether people have been married for 5, 15, or 20 years, there's something about divorce that makes them want to look their best. Divorcees want to feel good about themselves at work, when they get back to the dating scene, and when taking pics for online profiles on dating sites.

Not only that, but they want their old high school and college friends on Facebook and at reunions to notice how fantastic they look, and don't we all?

Looking Your Best in the New Chapter of Your Life

ABC News interviewed A. Hunter, a 43-year-old single mother of two who lost 60 pounds, had breast augmentation, and BOTOX – her results were amazing. What was her reason? She got divorced.

Hunter said that it's very liberating to feel good within your own skin. Since undergoing plastic surgery, she says her ex-husband compliments her now more than ever before.

She added that if she hadn't lost the weight and done some tweaking, she doesn't think that she would have set food outside the house. Hunter told ABC News that she doesn't think that she would have had the guts to go out and be in the dating scene.

Dr. Marina Peredo, who practices dermatology in New York, told ABC News that she understands the issue from both sides, as a woman who had work done after her own divorce and as a dermatologist treating female patients like herself.

Peredo said break-ups are hard and they feel like they've failed at something. She said it's hard to start after years of marriage and she thinks women take the time and are doing something for themselves for a change.

Men Are Doing it Too

While women are known to flock to the plastic surgeon's office following a divorce, statistics show that men are doing it too. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, men received more than 1 million cosmetic surgeries in 2013.

We do caution patients against making any impulsive decisions, such as going out and getting a tattoo, or radically altering their appearance after a major life event.

Before rushing into the plastic surgeon's office, we suggest that recent divorcees take some time to seriously consider plastic surgery – this way they can truly assess their goals and motivations.
