Clean Eating & Extreme Weight Loss

Before the term “clean eating” was coined, there was the Atkins Diet, the South Beach Diet, and the Zone Diet. Around 2002 and 2004, eating a diet low in sugar, processed carbohydrates, and processed foods became all the rage, and for good reason. Before nutritionists learned about the evils of too much sugar in the American diet, previous diet trends centered on “calories in vs. calories out” more than anything.

Fast-forward to today, clean eating has gained even more momentum in recent years, and it comes up a lot in our office. Whether it’s the Keto Diet, one of its predecessors, or simply “clean eating,” many of our patients intentionally eat a diet low in refined carbohydrates, and high in wholesome, one-ingredient foods.

As a plastic surgery practice devoted to improving patients’ quality of life, we help a lot of people who recently lost a significant amount of weight through bariatric surgery, and even diet and exercise. Since there is a growing body of evidence that clean eating is excellent for our health, we’re seeing more patients who lost their weight naturally (through clean eating), without surgical intervention.

Plastic Surgery as the Final Touch

When overweight individuals adopt a diet consisting of fresh produce, grass-fed beef, organic chicken, wild-caught fish, nuts and seeds, often the pounds will start melting off. When they experience massive weight loss, it’s exhilarating. However, when people undergo extreme weight loss, whether it’s through diet or surgery, or both, they’re usually left with excess, sagging skin.

After extreme weight loss, excess skin can keep people from truly enjoying their accomplishment. Loose, sagging skin will drape over the new, thinner frame, making the person feel uncomfortable in a bathing suit, or while wearing form-fitting clothing. It’s like they got so far, but they’re still dissatisfied with their appearance.

Because of this effect of extreme weight loss, many individuals seek plastic surgery to have the excess skin removed. In many cases of extreme weight loss, plastic surgery is like the icing on the cake – the final touches on the masterpiece.
