Male Plastic Surgery: A Rising Trend

Since the beginning, people have thought of plastic surgery being for women, but each year, more (and more) men are turning to plastic surgery. A trend that has showed no signs of slowing down. And who can blame these men? They care about their self-image too. Just like women, men deserve to look and feel their best.

It may be less talked about, but men have their own body image issues. For example, an overweight teenager may have been bullied throughout his school years, and when he heads off to college, he decides that male breast reduction surgery and liposuction on his abdomen and love handles.

He does this because he believes it will help him start the new chapter of his life as someone who is worthy of positive attention from the opposite sex. When a guy can be proactive and get a procedure that can deliver almost immediate results, it can be a huge confidence booster.

Customizing Plastic Surgery Procedures

In the past, if a man didn’t like his waistline or flabby chest, he’d try to hide it with a baggier shirt. But now instead of finding bigger clothes to fit their bodies, men are customizing procedures to fit the clothes they want to wear.

It’s gotten to the point where men are ripping out pages in magazines of models and celebrities who have features they’d like their surgeon to duplicate – a chiseled nose, a sleek waistline, a smoother forehead, etc.

In some circles, men are talking more freely about the work they’ve had done. They wear it like a badge of honor. And their peers begin to whisper about what they’ve been thinking of having done. Historically, male plastic surgery was perceived as a status symbol, as something that only the most cutting-edge and successful men do, but that’s changed.

The Trend is Changing

In the past, all men seemed to need was a razor, a bar of soap, and shaving cream but that’s no longer the case. Today’s men, especially in the bigger cities like Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, and Portland are putting a lot more time into self-care.

Nowadays, it’s not uncommon for men to go to spas, get manicures and pedicures, get waxed, and have laser hair removal. Getting treatments like Botox, blepharoplasty, or liposuction are becoming the natural progression of self-care for men. And the people on popular platforms like Instagram are encouraging them to care more about their looks.

All you have to do is check out the 2017 Plastic Surgery Statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to see for yourself the increase in plastic surgery procedures among the male population.

“Why has the trend changed so dramatically?” The biggest reason is the stigma being removed. Two decades ago, women barely talked about plastic surgery let alone men. Now, plastic surgery is frequently talked about and it’s become widely accepted. The second biggest reason is the “selfie culture” we’re living in.

Now that we’re taking a lot more pictures of ourselves, we see ourselves through more of a critical lens. A lot of times, people are using filters that smooth out the lines and wrinkles, so men think, “Why not take care of the problem by seeing a plastic surgeon?”

Lastly, we can’t forget about the “executive edge” men can get from Botox, dermal fillers and eyebrow lifts. The workplace is highly competitive and many of our male clients want to look as young and energetic on the outside as they feel on the inside.
