If you are unhappy with a protruding, loose, or sagging tummy that hasn't responded to weight loss or exercise, then you may be a candidate for a tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty. This surgical procedure is performed to remove excess fat and skin and to restore weak or separated muscles in the abdomen. Aging, pregnancy, weight fluctuations, heredity, and prior surgeries all may cause the problem of an abdomen needing a tummy tuck. Abdominoplasty is not a substitute for an appropriate weight loss or exercise program and women considering future pregnancies should consider postponing this procedure until after they have completed their pregnancies.
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
The tummy tuck procedure involves an incision in the lower part of the abdomen, just above the pubic area and the groins. For women, this incision is usually around or below the area of a c-section scar and is well hidden by a low bathing suit or underwear. The skin below the belly button is lifted and stretched to create a tight, flat shaped abdomen. This procedure is called a Mini-Tummy Tuck and is often combined with liposuction of the abdomen and sometimes flanks (sides or love handles). A full tummy tuck also requires making an incision around the belly button and lifting the skin all the way up to the ribs. With this approach, the muscles of the middle abdomen can be tightened with permanent sutures to repair a muscle separation (also called diastasis) that can happen after pregnancy. The skin is the stretched all the way from the ribs to the pubic area and the excess is removed. The belly button is then recreated to appear more youthful and tighter. The skin incision is closed with dissolving sutures, and a compression garment is applied to help decrease swelling and for muscle support.
The patients must take it easy for 2 weeks after the surgery, they generally need to maintain a flexed position when sleeping, and may need some help with their daily activities. Patients are encouraged to move and walk around right after surgery to avoid complications such as blood clots or pneumonia.
Heavy lifting is prohibited for 6 weeks after a tummy tuck to avoid stretching newly repaired abdominal muscles.
