Breast augmentation involves the placement of breast implants. These may be filled with silicone or saline are placed behind each breast, underneath either breast tissue or the chest muscle. The procedure generally lasts one to two hours and is usually performed under general anesthesia. After surgery, a patient's bust line may be increased by one or more cup sizes. To minimize scar visibility, incisions are made in inconspicuous places, such as the crease on the underside of the breast, or edge of the areola. A pocket is then created using minimal tissue manipulation to create a space into which the implant is inserted. There are many variables to consider when planning a breast augmentation. Most patients have some degree of breast asymmetry and each has a different desires for an end result. A careful consultation includes discussion of the patient's lifestyle, medical and social history, and a review of examples of desired looks that the patient prefers are important when deciding on the implants to use for the procedure.
